Kitchen Addition and Bathroom Remodel
The Story
The family at this home on 43rd Street felt constrained by an undersized kitchen and a low 2nd floor bathroom ceiling that followed the slope of the roof rafters. For the kitchen, the first order of business was to build the new exterior walls to create an approximately 500 s.f. addition out the back of the existing home.
After the addition was built, dried-in, and insulated, we installed a 2-ply laminated veneer lumber flush-mounted beam and removed 32’ of the old exterior wall at the rear of the house. The homeowners selected Adelphi custom cabinetry, granite countertops, and Miele, Subzero, and Wolf appliances. For the bathroom addition, we removed nearly 250 s.f. of the existing roof and built a new dormer for a taller exterior wall and new Weathershield awning windows.
As we knew that the new Jacuzzi would not fit up the stairs to the second floor, we employed a crane service to come to the project on the day we removed the roof in order to lift the tub through the opening and set it in the bathroom. We had to take special precautions to protect the tub, as it was then in the bathroom for the remainder of this project—from roof framing on. The homeowner selected travertine and slate tile for the floor and walls of the bathroom, and slate to wrap the front, curved edge of the corner Jacuzzi tub.
